There is a modified pathway for young adults transitioning from Child and Adult Mental Health Services (CAMHS) where each young person should have a formal re-evaluation of his/her ADHD status carried out by CAMHS one year prior to their 18th birthday to ensure the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met and/or an ongoing need for ADHD specific medication is established, more information is also on p.37 of the Model of Care. The Adult ADHD Teams accept referrals from both Adult and Child Community Mental Health Teams. The service is a specialist service providing assessment and treatment of ADHD for adults with moderate to severe ADHD symptoms and functional impairment in two or more aspects of their life. Access to Adult ADHD servicesĪdult ADHD clinics provide public services to patients over 18 years old and who are residing within a defined catchment area. Prior to the development of the National Clinical Programme there were no specific ADHD public services available for Adults in Ireland. ADHD is a common childhood disorder with high rates of continuation of ADHD symptoms into adulthood. Access to appropriate intervention and treatment has been shown to significantly improve outcomes for this patient population. It includes both assessment and treatment of the disorder and works collaboratively with voluntary agencies. The Programme is delivered as part of the HSE’s mental health service provision and across government departments to ensure a holistic, integrated, person-centred response to adults with ADHD. ADHD is a common neuro-developmental disorder with 3 core symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity). Sometimes, ADHD-like traits are caused by another condition, like bipolar disorder or a sleep disorder. Before accurately diagnosing ADHD, the doctor or clinician needs to rule out all other possible causes that could account for the ADHD-like traits. This National Clinical Programme (NCP) applies to adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). After 17 years of age, if you have five of the symptoms listed, a diagnosis can be made. Nine are related to inattention, and nine are linked to hyperactivity. There are five or more traits present. The traits affect performance. Your traits reduce the quality of your social, academic, and/or job performance. You currently experience significant problems with inattentive and/or hyperactivity-impulsive traits in two or more important settings, for example, at home and school, or home and work. The traits are present in more than one setting. You may not have been diagnosed as a child, but there must be evidence that you had problems with attention and self-control before you were 12 years old. The traits of ADHD have been present since childhood.Because of this, they often have low self-esteem after years of not meeting their own and other people's expectations, despite a desire to meet them. Low self-esteem: They worry about things they might have forgotten to do or done poorly because of inattention or impulsivity. They may also consume a lot of caffeine as a way to motivate themselves when their brain does not want to do a task. Sleep problems: Getting to sleep, staying asleep, and waking up on time can all be difficult.
